Kairos is an ensemble formed in Irpinia through the meeting of Gerardo Pizza and Vincenzo Natale, later established as a quintet with the addition of a rhythm section and trumpet. The project is rooted in the sound traditions of Southern Italy, using them as a foundation for an open dialogue with jazz and avant-garde improvisation. More than a simple stylistic fusion, their research seeks to recover the original social function of folk music: once a means of expressing the hardship of subordinate social groups, now often reduced to mere entertainment. Kairos rejects the idea of music as a static artefact, treating it instead as living matter. Through contemporary languages, the group reworks the musical heritage of Southern Italy to give voice to the urgencies of the present, restoring to sound its visceral and political force.
