Bice Bisordi was born in Pescia on 11 March 1905 to Raffaello Domenico and Mercede Maraviglia, the fifth of seven siblings. The Bisordi family has a long history in Pescia: Bice’s father had inherited a marble workshop where he carved commissioned works. It was in this studio that Bice discovered her artistic vocation, which would lead her to become one of the most significant sculptors of the twentieth century.
This exhibition presents a selection of works by Bice Bisordi, displayed in the very space that once served as her home and workshop. The exhibition area, located on the first floor of the Foundation, consists of two main adjoining rooms arranged in a “T” shape, along with the library. The layout is organised into five sections: classical studies, portraits, maternity, Bice and Manzù, and the sacred.
The rare opportunity to exhibit in Pescia—and particularly within this show—two important sculptures such as the Cardinals by Giacomo Manzoni, called Manzù, whose other versions are housed in major international museums (including the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Vatican Museums, and the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna Ca’ Pesaro in Venice), made possible the encounter between the two artists. The exhibition aims to establish a dialogue never before attempted between two sculptors who, though seemingly distant in artistic approach, pursued the same underlying purpose.
