The Magic of Prussian Blue

Cyanotype, also known as cyanography or “blueprint,” is an ancient and fascinating photographic printing technique, instantly recognizable for its Prussian Blue color. The term itself comes from the ancient Greek word kyanos, meaning “blue.” The process was invented in 1842 by the English scientist and astronomer Sir John Herschel. Originally conceived for reproducing technical documents and architectural drawings—which is where the term “blueprint,” still used in engineering and architecture, comes from—cyanotype later gained popularity among artists and photographers for its unique qualities.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

During the workshop, participants will learn the basics of working with photosensitive solutions, namely ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

They will acquire skills to apply the emulsion evenly on various surfaces, such as paper or fabric.

Participants will understand exposure times—whether under direct sunlight or UV lamps—and how light intensity affects the final result. The development process will be practiced through washing in water, observing the remarkable transformation of the image from yellow-green to deep blue. Proper techniques for drying and finishing the prints will also be taught.

The true magic of this technique reveals itself during the process, particularly at the moment of revelation, when a solution that initially appears yellow-green transforms into a stunning deep blue during washing.

This experience combines light, chemistry, and imagination, allowing participants to create artworks with rich and vibrant blue tones.
