The course aims to introduce and explore basic hand-building techniques for working with clay, such as slab, pinching, and coil methods, and to provide an overview of selected decorative techniques, including sgraffito, clay impressions, oxides, and glazes.

COURSE PROGRAMME

  • Course presentation
  • Introduction to materials and tools
  • What clay is, an overview of firings and types of decoration
  • First technique: pinching – creation of a cup with handle
  • Finishing the cup
  • Introduction to the coil technique
  • Creation of a small vase
  • Continuation and finishing of the coil-built vase
  • Introduction to the slab technique
  • Creation of a plate or tray with impressed decorations
  • Finishing previous works
  • Introduction to the sgraffito technique
  • Decoration of a selected piece using engobes
  • All pieces are fired (first firing/biscuit)
  • Introduction to glazes and their application
  • Decoration of impressions with oxides
  • Application of clear glaze or glazes to the pieces

Each participant develops an individual project using the techniques learned

Continuation and refinement of the open project in preparation for the biscuit firing

  • Final decoration of the open project with engobes, glazes, and oxides
  • Application of clear glaze
