DESCRIPTION

The course will cover multiple topics:

  • Introduction to the Greek language (phonetics and general linguistic aspects), alphabet, pronunciation, and writing.
  • Greek words and concepts in the Italian language.
  • Grammar, covering basic elements and syntax notions.
  • Reading, translation, analysis, and commentary of the text Athenaze.
  • Overview of Greek Literature History.

Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to read classical Greek prose texts with correct pronunciation, write and memorize some basic Attic Greek words, navigate a dictionary at a basic level, recognize some etymologies of modern words derived from Greek, and approach the comparison between a Greek text and its Italian translation (the ultimate goal of the course). Additionally, participants will gain a general understanding of the spirit and character of the ancient Greek people and recognize their cultural and social legacy in the Western world.
